Participants will have an opportunity to:

  • Explore the place of humanities education in the NSW curriculum.
  • Discuss the value of the nature of humanities education and its importance to student knowledge, understanding and skill development in a modern society including links to general capabilities and the contribution of humanities to a balanced curriculum.
  • Focus on practical demonstrations, using a range of digital resources, of the nature and relative importance of the concepts and conceptual thinking in the humanities learning area.
  • Undertake a conceptual simulation activity highlighting the nature of the humanities concepts and how they can be used to develop and critical and creative thinking.
  • Participate in a session highlighting a range of technological resources for quality HSIE teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to a plenary discussion on the nature of humanities Pedagogical Content Knowledge and will be provided with follow-up opportunities for continuing professional learning in the school setting.

At the conclusion of the workshop participants will have insights into curriculum thinking around NSW HSIE subjects, including strategies for use in the school and classroom. They will have been introduced to a large range of engaging resources and encouraged to think creatively about their planning and delivery of lessons to improve outcomes for all their students across HSIE subjects.

Malcolm's experience includes:
• Working as a secondary school teacher of history, geography and civics and citizenship from 1976 - 2014.
• Professional learning and jurisdictional involvement across Australia in the promotion of humanities subjects.
• Since 1998, keynote speaker and workshop presenter at National and State history, geography and technology conferences and at national humanities conferences in South Africa, United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand.
• Past chair of the Australian Geography Teachers Association (Chair 2008 -13)
• A member of the ACARA Advisory panel (2009-2013) for the Australian Curriculum: Geography
• Executive Director of Education Services Australia GeogSpace project
• Manager of Humanities and Social Sciences in the South Australian Department for Education (2007-2011 and 2015-2019)
• Humanities methodology Teaching Academic and lecturer at the University of South Australia (2016-2019)
• Member of the AITSL Expert Teacher Standing Committee (2016-2018)
