Having a strong mentoring program is critical for the development and retention of early career teachers. The first couple of years, especially the first year of teaching, is often the hardest and most draining of a teacher's career. There are few jobs where on your first day on the job, after graduating from your university degree, you are instantly responsible for the outcomes, performances and data of at least 25 other people.

While the University courses do a great job of laying the foundations of teaching through their subjects and practicums, a first year teacher is still very much a diamond in the rough that still needs polishing to become the high quality finished product - this is where mentoring of beginning teachers comes in.

Additionally, with a teaching shortage of potentially 60,000 teachers nationally in the next few years combined with attrition rates of beginning teachers in some studies sitting around 40% in their first five years of teaching, schools need to ensure their mentoring programs are supportive and meet the needs of their teachers.

This webinar will expand on Michael's previous presentation for ACSA in August 2020, "Mentoring and supporting early career teachers to improve retention rates" drilling deeper into a number of these elements to get the most out of a Mentoring program.

AITSL Standards Addressed:
6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 7.1, 7.2, and 7.4. This session will cover all three domains for the AITSL standards using the HAT standards. This session will also cover elements of the Australian Professional Standards for Principals particularly around the "Leading Teaching and Learning" focus area.
